Smoketown Rising Exhibit

A community led and powered archiving and photo preservation event!

The Smoketown Photo History Exhibit is a community powered and led effort to preserve and recognize the rich history of Kentucky’s oldest historically Black neighborhood, Smoketown. This exhibit will include past and present photos of families, homes, well-known residents, and landmarks from the neighborhood. Please join us in actively celebrating the heritage, culture, and Sesquicentennial (150th anniversary) of Louisville’s “Old-Eastend”.

The Smoketown Rising Exhibit is scheduled to open on Friday, September 18, 2015 from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at St. Peter Claver (526 Lampton Street). The exhibit opening coincides with the 2nd Annual Smoketown GetDown, a block party hosted by Kentuckians For The Commonwealth one block east at 735 Lampton Street.

The exhibit will remain open through October 2, 2015 and exhibit hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., Monday through Friday.

If you would like to include any of your family photos or keepsakes please contact us at bellamy.jessica@gmail.com or 502-836-7661. All photos will be scanned and originals will be returned to their owners.

Please consider making a tax-deductible donation to Kentucky Coalition (Kentuckians For The Commonwealth’s 501c3 organization), our fiscal sponsor, to help cover the costs of the exhibit. Costs include printing scanned photos, framing photos, and promoting the Smoketown Rising Exhibit.

Celebrate the Dream & the Dreamer

We have come a long way in the last 50 years but we are often reminded that we still have a ways to go until all men are truly considered equal… until men and women are judged not by the color of their skin or outward appearance but rather by the content of their character.  For this reason, we invite you to join us on Monday, January 19th from 3pm to 6pm to celebrate and honor the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Monday, January 19th, 3-6pm
