For Some, It’s Not Christmas Without Jam Cake.

We are so proud to be featured in the Courier Journal this month…

Thank you so much Jere Downs for writing such a wonderful article.  I cannot believe how well you captured my childhood memories of making jam cake with my Mother. Thank you Sam Upshaw Jr. for taking such beautiful photos.

We have had an overwhelming response to the article.  I cannot tell you how many folks have told us of a mother or grandmother who used to make jam cake for the Holidays and the wonderful memories your article evoked.

Held at the Victor Jory Theatre at Actors Theatre, the ticketed event will feature some of Louisville’s top chefs from Volare, Roux, The Oakroom, Mayan Café and Majid’s, along with personalities such as “cookie lady” Elizabeth Kizito and the Shirley Mae of Shirley Mae’s Café in Smoketown, all taking the stage to tell revealing and entertaining five-minute stories that touch on love, disaster and redemption.

Smoketown Women’s Mural

IMG_3360It was great to sit down with young ladies who were interested in hearing the stories of an older woman like me.  I am proud of the mural that you have created from our stories.  May the Smoketown art center become a beacon for the community and the city.  I appreciate how this mural unites the old ways with the new.
