Renowned local author David Domine names Shirley Mae’s Café as one of Kentucky’s best in his book 111 Fabulous Food Finds, Best Bites in the Bluegrass.
“Good souls and good soul food – that’s what makes Shirley Mae’s a Fabulous Food Find,” says David Domine.
We are always happy to hear that people appreciate the love and hard work that goes into making food the old fashioned way… Shirley Mae’s way. This is a special honor.
Thanks, David.

Bring your lawn chairs and come lounge around Shirley Mae’s sidewalk café May 1st through May 4th leading up to (and through) the 140th running of the Kentucky Derby this year. Come enjoy the music, Salute to Black Jockeys memorabilia and the Derby atmosphere… just two blocks south of the Pegasus Parade route (on Broadway)… along what’s fondly known as the Shirley Mae’s Café Homestretch at Clay & Lampton Streets. So, don’t stumble coming out of the gate. Stride down the Homestretch right into the Winners’ Circle at Shirley Mae’s Café… where the party just don’t stop.
It is hard to believe that it has been 25 years since Shirley Mae opened her doors but it is true. Shirley Mae’s Café officially opened for business on December 31, 1988.
Today the doors for this special New Year’s Eve Bash opened at 9 p.m. Shirley Mae served up her traditional New Year’s Dinner including blackeyed peas and cabbage. Patrons ate for free… with no cover charge to boot. The night’s activities lead up to the yearend countdown, balloon drop and champagne toast.
Happy Anniversary, Shirley Mae!!!
